Institutions of higher learning are central to transforming research, creativity, and emerging ideas into market ready solutions that respond to real world challenges. Strengthening pathways for innovation development, knowledge transfer, and commercialisation is therefore critical to enhancing Kenya’s productive capacity and global competitiveness.
It is on this background that the Kenya National Innovation Agency (KeNIA) joined innovators, researchers, industry leaders, government representatives, academia, and young entrepreneurs at the 9th Nairobi Innovation Week (NIW 2026), hosted by the University of Nairobi under the theme, "Youth-Driven Solutions for a Sustainable Future."
The event provided a platform for showcasing transformative ideas, fostering partnerships, and advancing conversations on how innovation can drive sustainable development through stronger collaboration among key stakeholders.
Speaking during the event, KeNIA Chief Executive Officer Dr Tonny Omwansa emphasised the importance of strengthening partnerships between government, industry, academia, and other stakeholders to accelerate research commercialisation and grow Kenya’s innovation ecosystem. He noted that mentorship, access to sustainable financing, and supportive innovation networks are essential in enabling student innovators and researchers to move from ideas to impactful enterprises.
Dr Omwansa reaffirmed KeNIA’s commitment to supporting universities and TVETS in building vibrant innovation ecosystems and strengthening the journey from research and discovery to market-ready solutions.
“The more globally competitive our universities and TVETS become, the more globally competitive Kenya becomes. When our institutions excel in research, innovation, and talent development, they strengthen the country’s ability to compete and grow,” he noted.
University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor Eng. Prof. Ayub N. Gitau underscored the role of universities as centres of knowledge creation, innovation, and talent development. He called for increased investment in research excellence, entrepreneurship, intellectual property protection, and stronger collaboration between academia, industry, and government to unlock the full potential of innovation.
As NIW 2026 concluded, the event reaffirmed the importance of empowering young innovators and creating stronger pathways for ideas to evolve into solutions that drive sustainable economic growth. The discussions and partnerships forged during the event highlighted the need for continued support, investment, and collaboration to help innovators transform promising ideas into impactful solutions for Kenya’s future.
